Well Dr. Saul, I keep thinking about this story. What about checking facebook for the town this picture would have been taken. So you could put that picture up to see if anyone there knows anything. Also what about the historical society in the town the picture was taken? Just a few more things to consider, and knowing you, you already have!
I wonder if chatgpt was reacting to the picture that it was able to bring up - rather than the picture that you had as part of the article. Old pictures like this are very captivating. I always want to know more. What was going on? Thank you Wendy for sharing your stories with us.
Wendy, I put the photo into Chatgpt and a lot came up. Too much to post here. But I can send you the summary if you are interested. my email is ecpscience@gmail.com. I also put the image into google lens, but not as much came up. Such a terrible history for the country.
Don't trust GpT on this kind of thing. It might work with specific further questions/insights, but I think that our best bet is to see waht you notice that Chat GpT doesn't seem to, e.g. why the man in handcuffs is so well dressed incl a handkerchief in his breast pocket. And waht are the two Black guys (are the definitely Black?) doing on the far right side of the frame? Why so many guns, looking more ceremonial than "at arms." And who would take their young girl, held in arms, to such an event?
Wendy, Well now you done and did it!! I was going to get some work done this afternoon, but now, I have an overwhelming desire to stop what I was supposed to do and to find out more about the photograph and Mary Phagan/Phagen :-) . You are such a compelling story teller. Thank you Wendy! You are truly amazing. You know how to light the fuse!!!
Jewish history; lynching, family: what a combination
What if you focused the question on, for instance, the construction of the platform. Could it suggest anything specific?
Or the guns perhaps? What were those kind of guns used for?
For thoseof you interested in the Leo Frank case, here is a summary with accompanying photos. Thanks Liz P. for the ref; https://thebreman.org/research/leo-frank/

From Chatgpt - About the Photograph
The image belongs to the Library of Congress collection, titled “Lynching of Leo Frank, Marietta, Georgia”, dated August 17, 1915

I checked LoC. It's not there. More bad info from Chat GpT, I fear.

Fascinating, Wendy. I have nothing to add that's helpful, but cool mystery to pursue.
